TRC, LNRCS Identify with 100 EVD Orphans

first_imgWith support from the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC), the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) has identified with several children orphaned by the Ebola virus disease (EVD) that ravaged the country two years ago. LNRCS provided livelihood and psychosocial assistance to 100 children who lost one or both parents during the EVD outbreak. The beneficiaries are from Gardnerville, Bushrod Island, Paynesville and Central Monrovia. LNRCS donated food and other items including rice, vegetable oil, vita, toiletries, used clothes, footballs, school bags to 20-orphanages hosting the affected children. Friday’s donation on the campus of the Great Commission Academy in Chicken Soup Factory, Gardnersville, was done in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. According to Jackson Wankah, Red Cross head of office for Montserrado County, who supervised the distribution of donations, there is a need to continuously cater to the needs of innocent children deprived of parental care.“They lost their parents so we need to fill in these voids left behind. For that, I’m so grateful to these orphanages that are making the sacrifice to cater to the children,” Mr. Wankah said. He also lauded the TRC for assisting the orphans.“The children have had too much to bear and as we are around them trying to provide for their needs, they will not reflect on their horrible situations,” Wankan added. He also said that as the foremost humanitarian responder, the Red Cross remains committed to increase and expand support to the recovery and reintegration of orphans and vulnerable children with dignity and renewed hope as they return to their respective communities. One of the orphans, Abraham Beah, who spoke on behalf of his friends, thanked the Red Cross for the donations, especially the school materials, which he said will help their guardians with the cost of getting their school supplies.Beah, who is from the Greater Commission Orphanage Home, said their caregivers are always making the sacrifices to keep them happy. “We are very grateful to our caregivers for the sacrifices they are making to keep us going. I also want to say a big thanks to LNRCS and her partners,” he added. In another development, the Liberian Red Cross with support from the International Federation of the Red Cross/Red Crescent recently continued the distribution of relief supplies to flood victims in Lower Margibi County.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
