Sharks roster takes form as opening night looms

first_imgCALGARY, Alberta — Pete DeBoer is accustomed to watching his Sharks team battle through the fatigue that comes with the most arduous travel schedule in the NHL.That’s why he didn’t hesitate to send the AHL Barracuda up to Canada Tuesday to take on the Calgary Flames. With a morning practice in San Jose followed by a two-and-a-half flight to Calgary, the Sharks recalled 14 players for their fourth preseason game, giving the likes of Joe Thornton, Brent Burns and Evander Kane a night off. World’s scariest landing!

first_imgThis is the world’s scariest landing and this video shows you the pilot’s eye view. Perched at 2,800m (9,200ft) on a tiny outcrop of relatively “flat land” nestled amongst the world’s tallest mountains Tenzing-HillaryAirport at Lukla, Nepal tests even the most confident flyers. It’s the starting point for trekkers climbing Mount Everest. But despite the terrifying view ahead, passengers scramble for a front row seat as there is no allocated seating on most airlines flying up to Lukla. The cockpit door is left open, or there is none, and the best seats in the house are 1A and 1B right behind the pilot and co-pilot.The flight takes 30 minutes from Kathmandu and it slowly winds its way up out of the capital of Nepal with the Everest massif dominating the breathtaking scenery. The route then winds its way through valleys and well below ridge lines and then the Lukla airport appears, a tiny stripe of black in a vista of grandeur. However, the first thing that strikes you – and you hope your aircraft will not strike it – is a sheer mountain face at the end of the runway. There is only one chance at this.Undershoot the runway and your aircraft will plummet into a rock strewn ravine thousands of feet deep. Overshoot and it’s straight into the sheer rock wall. AirlineRatings.com has sourced the best video ever shot of the landing into Lukla which can be viewed below. It was taken in high definition from a Dornier Do228 registered 9N-AIE, by Capt Monir Shrestha and shows both the majesty and terror of the airport’s precarious location.Lukla’s Airport, was built by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay to assist in the efforts to build a better life for the residents of the region. It was renamed in their honor in January 2008.There are daily flights operated by five airlines between Lukla and Kathmandu during daylight hours and in good weather. The airport’s paved 460m (1,510 ft) long runway with a 12 per cent gradient is only accessible to helicopters and small specialized STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, such as Dornier Do 228 and De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters. There are no landings aids.last_img read more

Rocks of Hyderabad – Golconda — Geocache of the Week

first_imgEarthCacheGC6CX04by Tomazzo69 Just a short distance from Hyderabad, the technical hub of Telangana, India, stands the fortress of Golconda. Started in 1143, it was built up by several dynasties through the centuries, protecting royalty and priceless jewels alike. The fortress may be old, but it’s practically a spring chicken compared to the rocks on and from which it is built. And although breathtaking, we’re talking about an EarthCache, so it is the rocks themselves that are the real stars of our Geocache of the Week, Rocks of Hyderabad – Golconda. The ruins of Golconda. Image by nykkoleDon’t get distracted by Golconda’s diamonds. For this cache, we’re interested in its granite. Most of the area is built on granite dating back over 2.5 billion years, making it some of the oldest and hardest rock in the world.Tackle your big rocks first. Image by The IronsGeologists estimate that the rocks formed about the same time as the earth’s crust, when molten magma bubbled up from within the earth and cooled under the surface. These rocks are a reminder not to take erosion for granite! Image by nykkoleOver time—about 25 million years—the softer outer layers of granite eroded away, leaving the tors around which Golconda was built.Four tourists touring glorious tors. Image by RATCHET_FMRThe granite maintained a natural cooling and drainage system within the structure, which played an important role in the construction and maintenance of the fortress. These systems fed the once lush, sprawling gardens, the remnants of which are still visible today.Gaze on the green gardens of Golconda. Image by nykkoleOnce you learn all you can from the rock, take some time to explore the ruins of the fortress itself. After all, it’s listed as an official treasure on the Archeological Survey of India’s “List of Monuments.”Golconda rocks! Image by LadatIn addition to the imposing architecture, you can also view cannons, tombs, and intricate painted wall art. The fortress’ natural acoustic system was specially designed to amplify sound. The noise of a single clap is said to be able to travel over a kilometer through the acoustically engineered corridors. On the steps of the palace. Image by Morph1umIf you visit, the fort itself is open daily from 9:00 to 17:30, but consider visiting in the late afternoon and staying into the evening for the light and sound show that bathes the ancient rocks in stunning color.Continue to explore some of the most amazing geocaches around the world. Check out all of the Geocaches of the Week on the Geocaching blog. Research on Military Relationship Enrichment Programs

first_imgBy Kimberly Quinn, FD Research Assistant & Kacy Mixon, M.S., LMFT[Flickr, Child’s Hands in Clay by Diana Robinson,CC BY-ND 2.0] Retrieved on September 17, 2015Marriage and relationship enrichment (MRE) programs have been utilized for many years. In previous posts we’ve highlighted various MRE programs available to military couples. Research specific to military targeted programming has found that couples who participate in MRE programs are less likely to divorce [4], have higher relationship satisfaction, and improved anger management skills [5].Although research has found many positive effects of military couples engaging in these programs, the value of such programming for diverse couples remains unclear. For instance, current evidence-based healthy marriage programming reflects efficacy with White, middle-class, married couples, but may not be as effective for low income or minority couples [1]. Other emerging research targeting disadvantaged and minority populations [2] has found that couples who report more distress at pre-assessment also have higher relationship satisfaction at the completion of relationship enrichment programs [3].What can professionals working with Military families do with this information?[Flickr, Endless Love by Dennis Skley, CC BY-ND 2.0] Retrieved on September 17, 2015Some MRE programs are not rooted in the specific needs of military relationships, and some service branches have optimized program curricula to meet the unique demands of military couples [4]. As professionals working with military couples, it can be helpful to explore what is available and relay this information when making referrals. UP civic polls: Voters irate after names struck off the list

first_img “We voted for Vidhan Sabha elections and our polling station was Queen’s college. However, it seems that the State election commission did not validate its list from the Central election commission’s list. Could see the pain and anguish of people, especially the senior citizens whose statutory right to vote has been compromised because of irresponsible officials of the State election commission,” said Mr. Haider.Sayyad Ashraf Warsi, who runs a food store in Qaiserbagh, was, however, not that lucky. He could not find his name in the list in ward 44 of the Lucknow municipality where he lives. When he contacted officials, he said, they told him nothing could be done.”I had used the same booth in Tikrahouse to vote in the Assembly election. I don’t know what happened today. The officials at the booth went through the entire list but could not find my name,” said Mr. Warsi, looking puzzled. He said there were many others at the booth like him.Another voter in Lucknow complained that that his name was missing from all lists.”My vote used to be in Lucknow Montessori College, Purana Quila but it seems that voting stations have changed. I was told to try at Municipal Nursery School opposite Loreto but could not find our names there. What a pity!” he said.Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also raised the issue through a tweet. “Media reports that a lot of voters names are missing from the voting list of today’s election. This type of digital India cannot take us forward,” he said. The State election commission is yet to issue a statement. Second phase of civic polls in Uttar Pradesh Voting for the second phase of municipal election in Uttar Pradesh was marked by a large number of names missing from the voter lists across the State. In Lucknow itself, many well-known persons as well as common voters could not find their names on the voter list.Three-time Mayor of Lucknow Dauji Gupta could not find his name in the voter list in Naka Hindola area of the State capital, along with 20 family members. UP cabinet minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi and Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kalraj Mishra’s names were also missing from the voters’ list.MLA Nasir Khan from Rampur also could not vote.Mohammad Haider, a lawyer from Lucknow, was irate after he did not find his name in the original list. He located his name in some other ward’s list and eventually managed to vote.last_img read more
